The Houston Scottish Rite Learning Center, Inc. was started in 1991 in response to a
demand in the area for Dyslexia and Literacy education. It is estimated that ten percent
of the nation's children suffer from some form of communication disorder.
Fortunately, most children with communication disorders can be helped by speech-language
pathologists. However, early diagnosis is the key to successful treatment.
For more than three decades, the Scottish Rite has been a national leader in helping
children with language disorders, regardless of race, creed, color or ability to pay.
The Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas has developed and produced a videotaped dyslexia
training program - 350 hours, an hour of instruction a day for two years. This
program currently is used in more than 600 Texas school districts, 27 other states and six
countries. The HSR Learning Center will offer elementary school age children this
acclaimed videotaped program.
When the Texas Legislature required, in 1987, that every school district test pupils
for dyslexia and provide special instruction for those afflicted, the hospital offered its
instructional program to anyone interested in using it.
